The default setting for psychedelic rock vocals nowadays seems to be a dazed, subterranean (and invariably male) drawl. Few contemporary groups with a mind-altering manifesto can boast a figure with the shamanic charisma and lung capacity of a Grace Slick or Renate Knaup. Seattle's Midday Veil are an exception. In Emily Pothast they have a frontwoman and songwriter with a flair for the dramatic and the intensity of a 24 carat diva, capable of subtle insinuation and gale-force incantation.
Pothast, who also contributes syntha and percussion, isn't the only weapon in their arsenal. The six-piece are ridiculously adept at building collective tension through interlocking layers of repetition, gradually accumulating density as they approach orgasmic peaks. Of course, it's impossible to make this kind of trance rock fly without a decent drummer, and Chris Pollina (replaced, since this album, by Garrett Moore) strikes an admirable balance of power and restraint. David Golightly's synths cut through with surgical focus while guitarist Timm Mason is a team player rather than a grandstander. Though cosmically expansive, Midday Veil's songs are fortified with muscular hooks and memorable melodies. The most indulgent item here is the shortest: "Sun Stone" is a brief drone excursion which, at only three minutes, precedes the album's remarkable 11 minute endpiece, "Great Cold Of The Night".
The group's decision to release a video for this particular song isn't as eccentric as it might seem. "Great Cold" is at once an addictive pop confection, an example of neo-psych at its most unselfconsciously joyous and a compulsive dancefloor banger. When Mason's scalding feedback gives way to a stroboscopic Hi-NRG stomp at the halfway mark, it's a gleeful union of distant relatives. Pothast is formidable here, savouring every elongated vowel like Eartha Kitt possessed by Black Widow's Kip Trevor. Now that's how you finish an album.
