With a list price of just over two dollars per disc, it's a bargain not to be missed. What's most impressive about these recordings of well over 100 symphonies made between 1953 and 1976, almost all of which feature the New York Philharmonic, is the scope and depth of Bernstein's repertoire. The complete symphonic works of many of the great symphonists are here, including Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Sibelius. In addition to less-than-complete sets of symphonies by other major composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich, Bernstein ventures into more obscure repertoire. Nielsen and Ives, who were rarely performed at the time these recordings were made, are represented, as well as a number of mid-20th century composers, mostly American, including Randall Thompson, Carlos Chávez, Roy Harris, Marc Blitzstein, Paul Hindemith, David Diamond, Harold Shapero, and William Schuman. The conductor's definitive recordings of his own three symphonies are here as well. Bernstein's sometimes idiosyncratic approach may not suit every listener in every single performance, but there are so many moments of transcendence that the set is a goldmine for any listener with an interest in the conductor. The recordings were not remastered for this release, but the most recently mastered versions are used, so the sound is very fine to excellent.
